RetroVerse: Slot Overview

Developer Push Gaming continues its tour of the rose-tinted past with RetroVerse, a cluster paying slot with a backwards-looking vision. Well, the studio's Retro range might look to the past to find artistic inspiration, but technically, these have been thoroughly modern-day slots operating with forward-thinking mechanics and features. They've also dropped at two-year intervals: Retro Tapes Cluster Link in 2022, Retro Tapes in 2024, and now blasting into 2026 is RetroVerse, the third in the series, and one which builds on past releases through various innovations rather than completely reinventing what preceded it.

Where Retro Tapes was relatively minimalist in appearance, and Retro Sweets moved to a sort of Miami diner, RetroVerse sets up shop in a video game arcade. Kids these days might be unfamiliar with these, but they were places you could go, pop a coin into a machine and play the latest video game. Why? Partly because home computers and consoles often didn't have the processing power to compete with an arcade game's audiovisuals, partly because it was a fun place to hang out with your buds. These days, consoles, computers, and smartphones are light years ahead of what they used to be, causing people to stay home, isolated from each other, disconnected from society… Oops, sorry, you see what retro thinking of the good old days can lead to? Anyway, RetroVerse brings an excellent old school gaming effect to the screen, all blocky and bleeping for cluster players' enjoyment.

Built into a gaming cabinet of yore is RetroVerse's gaming area. It's a big 6x9 grid, creating winning clusters when 5 or more matching symbols are connected to each other. Players can feed $/€0.10 to $/€100 into the machine per spin, and they should be in the mood for a highly volatile time. Depending on the market, the RTP can vary, where the top value is 96.24%.

Just six pay symbols land on RetroVerse's reels, shaped like console controllers or gaming devices. A 5 OAK cluster will pay 0.1x-0.5x the bet, while the largest clusters are 17+ in size and pay 8x-250x the bet. When a cluster is created, the winning symbols get removed after paying. Symbols drop down to replace them, and if a new winning cluster appears, the cascading feature will activate again.

RetroVerse: Slot Features

In this section are RetroVerse's wilds, Wild Mystery symbols, Instant Prize symbols, Magnets, Light Guns, Free Spins, Collector, Multiplicator, Push Bets, and bonus buys.

Wild Symbol

The Arcade wild substitutes for paying symbols. Each wild has a multiplier associated with it of x1 to x10. When a wild is part of a Cluster Win, it stays in its position until there are no more cluster wins. It also increases its multiplier by +1 when it participates in a win. Its multiplier is applied to cluster wins the wild is part of, and when more than one wild is part of the same cluster, they apply their multipliers to it one after the other.

Wild Mystery Symbol

The Wild Mystery symbol also substitutes for paying symbols. In the base game, it has a meter with 3 levels. Levels are dependent on the number of cluster wins it participates in. When all levels are achieved, the Wild Mystery symbol can reveal a wild symbol with a multiplier of x2 to x10, a scatter, or a Magnet symbol. If the maximum number of scatters are on the grid, the Wild Mystery can reveal an Instant Prize symbol of 25x to 500x.

In free spins, the Wild Mystery symbol only opens if the win cluster contains the number of Instant Prize symbols and Collector symbols indicated on the Wild Mystery symbol. It then reveals an Instant Prize symbol of 25x-500x, a wild with a multiplier of x2 to x10, a Magnet, a Multiplicator symbol, or a Collector symbol.

Instant Prize Symbols

Instant Prize symbols land with a value of 1x to 500x the bet. When Instant Prize symbols form a cluster of 5 or more, a win is paid.

Magnet Symbol

The Magnet symbol selects one type of paying symbol and pulls all matching symbols to its position to create a cluster win. It can pull Instant Prize symbols if at least 4 of them are on the grid. Magnets can also attract wilds and Wild Mystery symbols. When a cluster is created, the Magnet transforms into the matching pay symbol or an Instant Prize symbol.

Light Gun Symbol

The Light Gun symbol can randomly remove 2 regular paying symbol types from the reels.

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters awards 6, 8, 10, or 12 free spins, respectively. When triggered, the Wild Mystery symbols, wilds, and Instant Prizes from the base game remain in position and carry over to the bonus. During the feature, each empty position spins to land wilds, Wild Mystery symbols, Instant Prize symbols, Magnets, Extra Spin symbols, or blanks. Each Instant Prize symbol remains in its position throughout the feature, and clusters are evaluated at the end of the round. The Extra Spin symbol awards +1 or +2 free spins before transforming into an Instant Prize symbol. Each new wild that lands also awards +2 free spins.

Collector Feature

The Collector symbol can only be revealed by Wild Mystery symbols in free spins. When the Collector symbol shows up in a cluster, it collects all of the Instant Prize symbol values in the cluster. After Instant Prize values are collected, the symbols are removed, and their empty positions can spin to reveal wilds, Wild Mystery symbols, Instant Prize symbols, Magnets, Multiplicator symbols, or Extra Spins 1 or 2.

Multiplicator

During free spins, the Multiplicator symbol may be revealed by a Wild Mystery symbol or after a Collector symbol action. It has a value of x2-x10, which multiplies all adjacent Instant Prizes and Collector symbols. It then transforms into an Instant Prize symbol.

Push Bets & Bonus Buys

Activating the Boost Push Bet for 1.5x or the Mega Boost Push Bet for 2.5x increases the chance of triggering free spins by 2.5x and 9.5x, respectively. The two buy options are free spins for 120x or super free spins for 280x.

RetroVerse: Slot Verdict

As before, RetroVerse's theme might be retro, but its gameplay is bang on contemporary. Push Gaming has a long, illustrious history of designing highly playable cluster pays slots, beginning in the Jammin' Jars days, and RetroVerse goes to show it still knows a trick or two about making them. Players acquainted with Retro Tapes and Retro Sweets should be able to slide easily into the RetroVerse groove, as much of what it offers has persisted through the series. Things like the big grid set up, Instant Prizes paying in clusters via Cluster Links, and the hold 'n' spin bonus round. As a result, nipping from previous Retro releases to this one is unlikely to instigate major jolts of disorientation, but Push Gaming has prodded the game to ensure one or two surprises lie in wait for returning players.

Wilds and Wild Mystery symbols are two of the changes. Wilds come with a random multiplier of up to x10, before the value is increased by winning cluster participation. So starting multiplier values can be quite high, though this is tempered by a drop in the maximum cluster payout value. The Wild Mystery symbols are brand new, and they add an exciting unpredictability, as they become a wild multiplier, scatter, or Magnet in the base game, or a Multiplicator or Collector in the bonus round, amongst other things. The Collector ups the entertainment, being able to suck in Instant Prize symbol values, freeing up space on the grid. The Multiplicator is also a desirable symbol, rounding off a set of what are, overall, positive additions and tweaks.

It is fairly safe to say that if you liked the previous Retro slots, then RetroVerse should be a match as well. Push Gaming has kept winning potential throughout the range steady at 10,000x the bet, capping another cluster pays slot that might look to the past for some nostalgic thematic inspiration, but keeps its eye on the future in terms of gameplay and feature innovation.
